Job Summary

The PLC Specialist based in Houston, TX will be part of the Ensign Drilling Solutions team responsible for the planning, design and delivery of drilling rig automation and performance systems. This position will use technical, analytical, and programming skills to assist in the development, deployment and maintenance of drilling rig automation systems and applications in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The position will take a leadership role on deployment projects, provide technical consulting, develop electrical controls systems, and provide remote technical support across global drilling divisions. Must be willing to learn the drilling process in order to effectively perform job duties.

The successful candidate will be required to travel to Ensign's field offices, rig construction facilities and drilling rigs working in the field.

Specific Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Reporting directly to the Drilling Solutions Operations Manager the PLC Specialist will:

  • Assist in the development of control systems for drilling rigs
  • Deploy and commission PLC based control systems on drilling rigs globally as an individual or as part of a team (this will require travel to field locations)
  • Provide remote technical support to end users and field technicians
  • Assist in the deployment and support of remote access communications systems
  • Maintain professional attitude while working in intense environments with internal and external customers
  • Capture specifications and user requirements
  • Work with engineering & operations to determine detailed design and best practices

Qualifications

  • Proficient in PLC programming software suites including: Siemens TIA Portal, Omron CX- One, Allen-Bradley Rockwell Studio 5000, and/or GE Proficy
  • HMI development experience with at least one of the following: Ignition by Inductive Automation, PanelView, CX-designer, and GE Cimplicity
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office applications
  • Posses a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Posses or able to obtain a U.S. passport
  • Able to perform physically demanding work including climbing several flights of stairs, working at heights, and lifting equipment weighing up to 50lbs

  • Work comfortably with field personnel
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Be able and willing to travel globally to the field or other office locations as required (up to 50% travel may be required)

Education and Experience

Education

  • Accredited technical degree or Bachelor’s in an engineering-based discipline
  • 9 years of direct PLC based programming and commissioning experience in industrial or oil & gas environments considered in leu of a degree

Experience:

  • Minimum five years working with at least one of the following PLC systems: Siemens, GE, Omron, and/or Allen-Bradley
  • Minimum two years working with HMI software applications

Experience and familiarity working with SCRs, VFDs, MCCs, and control system network interfaces preferred
